Farewell, Lady Bird ~ Bless You for the Gift of Flowers!

Claudia Alta Taylor "Lady Bird" Johnson

December 22, 1912 - July 11. 2007
"Lady Bird" Johnson was laid to rest today in her beloved Texas Hill Country.

My personal admiration for Lady Bird was for her dedication to the beautification of the country. She had a profound effect on the cleaning up of Washington, DC. The beautiful daffodils and tulips that pop up each Spring in the nation's capital and the well-manacured and landscaped mall are thanks to her. The flowers that grown along side of our highways are due to her. The limits on billboards along the highways are due to her.

In 1982, Mrs. Claudia Alta Taylor 'Lady Bird' Johnson and Mrs. Helen Hayes founded the National Wildflower Research Center ( www.wildflower.org ) to help preseve and restore the beauty and biological richness of North America. Later named the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, it is the capstone of Mrs. Johnson's life-long commitment to the nation's enviornment. Since it's founding, the Wildflower Center has become one of the country's most effective voices for protecting native places, native landscapes and ecological health.

Mrs. Johnson helped bring attention to the beauty that we all need to enrich our lives. Thank you for your gift to all of America.
