Farewell, Don Ho

Don Ho
August 13, 1930 - April 14, 2007

Many people know Don Ho for his entertaining in Waikiki, Hawaii and the song 'Tiny Bubbles' - he hated that song and so did any clear thinking person that had to hear it everyday - yet, it was his signature song.

I remember Don Ho as the man and the musician - not the entertainer. He was a friend of my step-dad's and I had the privelege of listening to the musician as I was growing up. The Hawaiians love their music and will play for any reason! Being present when they would laugh and play the music they loved and dance was a joyous event. I remember the smile and the laughter and the music. It is a gift I had in my life that I will ever remember.

Most every significant event of my youth was marked in song and celebration at one of Don Ho's shows. Backed up by the Aliis, Don Ho would 'talk story' and make music, laughter and joy.

Don Ho served in the Air Force, and began his music career after college and the Air Force. He began at the Kaneohe joint called "Honey's" which was his mother's place. During the War, it was always packed with service men. He was a self-taught musician and a natural humorist.

For the joy you brought, I'll remember you.
Rest in Peace and thank you for the memories.

I'll Remember You
by Kui Lee

I'll remember you
Long after this endless summer has gone
I'll be lonely oh so lonely
Living only to remember you

I'll remember you
Your voice as soft as the warm summer breeze
Your sweet laughter, mornings after
Ever after, ooh I'll remember you

To your arms someday
I'll return to stay
Till then I will remember too
Every bright star we made wishes upon
Love me always, promise always
Oooh, you'll remember too

To your arms someday
I'll return to stay
Till then I will remember too
Every bright start we made wishes upon
Love me always, promise always
Oooh, you'll remember too
You'll remember too

As a child, I would run from another room to see Don Ho on television. His smile, his apparent joy at performing was something you didn't soon forget.

I can't help it. I loved 'Tiny Bubbles'.

Don exemplified the joy of music with that smile and the twinkling eyes - a signature of the Hawaiian people and their joy for life.

But, 'Tiny Bubbles' EVERY day is a bit much for anyone, and he had decades of it... He stopped singing it long ago and would conduct the audience while it played and let them sing.

The Aliis had some rather irreverent verses to that song!!!!

it is cool that you knew him. I always wonder how family and friends of celebrities deal with the loss of a loved one or friend when it is in the spotlight. I would hate to have my grief up on display for the nation to see.
